Natural Hair | Three Reasons Going Natural is One of the Dopest Decisions I’ve Ever Made

Beauties,

When I began my natural hair journey in 2011, I had the slightest idea of how that decision would change my life.  I knew that after a bad keratin treatment, my hair would no longer curl and I needed that to change.  In the process of my hair changing, I changed.  Nearly five years after my big chop, I’ve learned so much about myself.

Below are three reasons going natural is one of the dopest decisions I’ve ever made:

1. Natural hair is versatile.

For almost 24 years of my life, I wore my hair straight.  I had never explored my natural curls, short hair, protective styles, etc.  I realized that after my big chop in February 2011, I felt a little bolder.  I figured since my hair was short, why not explore braids.  After braids, I began to play with my hair more and try wash and gos, twist outs and braid outs.  Before I knew it, I had experienced short hair, shaved sides, color, protective styles and nearly every hair style you could imagine.  And guess what?  I loved them all!

2. I know how to care for my hair.

As embarrassing as it may be to say this, before going natural, I didn’t know how to care for my hair.  I had to learn from scratch how to take care of my hair and what my hair and scalp likes.  It was a serious learning curve that included a lot of trial and error.  I never gave up, though.  I learned that my curls need moisture, coconut oil is my BFF and to stay away from sulfates.  I developed creativity I didn’t know I had and I have to admit, it’s pretty dope to know that I can create bomb curls all on my own.

3. My curls are just that…mine.

The beautiful thing about curly hair is that no one’s curls are identical.  We all have a distinct curl pattern created just for us.  How cool is that?  My hair tends to have tight curls on the side and longer, wavier curls on top.  It doesn’t always do what I want, but I love it because it’s mine!

I have learned to know, love and embrace my curls.  It is amazing seeing so many women rocking and loving their natural curls too!  I’m happy to share that Dove Hair recently created curly haired emojis.

These cute emojis are perfect for curly girls to express ourselves and I appreciate that Dove Hair encourages women to embrace their curls.

What is one thing you have learned about your curls since going natural?

God bless & stay fabellis,
