As many of you may know from Facebook or Twitter, yesterday was my one year natural hair anniversary! This is a major mark in the natural hair community. Many times the first year can be very trying and difficult.
My Story
Many times women are asked why they chose to go natural. My story is a bit unique. I was natural for over 22 years before experimenting with my hair. I chose to get a keratin treatment in 2010. Many will argue that a keratin treatment is not a relaxer. In theory, it isn't, but it has many of the same effects. I got the treatment with the intentions of my hair being able to stay straighter longer and with less frizz. I did not realize that it would take away every curl I had.
My Choice
I chose to transition for five months. I transitioned from October 2010 to February 2011. I cut off my keratin treated hair and initially rocked a short, blowed out look. In the end, I opted for my natural locks.
My Transition
Below are pictures from the big chop to today.
As you can see, I did wear protective styling, but I always took a break in between. I do feel braids are a great protective style and out of all the styles, they are what I enjoyed most other than twists and twist outs.
Thanks for reading & God bless!
