Life is kind of funny at times. The night before Valentine's Day, I had a hair emergency and found myself scrambling to find not only a hairstyle, but a hair stylist as well. As I remembered a stylist I met the weekend before, I found her Instagram page and saw crochet braids she had installed. I loved them! I had never worn crochet braids before, but I loved how natural they looked. Plus, they reminded me of a sew in I had previously.
I contacted the hair stylist and before I knew it, I had an appointment to have crochet braids installed. The truth is though... I wasn't altogether sure how they were different from a sew-in. Once I arrived, I soon learned the difference.
What's the Difference?
- Hair used is in bulk form instead of weave tracks.
- Once your own hair is braided down, the bulk weave hair is installed using a latch hook.
- The result is less tension on your own hair.
- Easier access to your scalp.
What I love most about crochet braids is how comfortable my hair and scalp feels. I only experienced tension the first night after having them installed and from then on, it hasn't felt like I have anything installed. It's carefree and comfortable! Also, if you are wondering, she used Freetress Bohemian Curl for my braids.

Have you ever rocked crochet braids? Is this a protective style you'd try?
God bless & stay fabellis,
I wear em all the time! :) Currently have straight ones right now, but I love yours!
ReplyDeleteI love this look on you!
ReplyDeleteI know you rock crochet braids heavy! You are one of the main people who sparked my interest in them! Now I see why you wear them! I LOVE THEM! Thanks Ash! :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks lady! I can't wait to see your post next week. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of the article! :-)
ReplyDeleteVery nice and thanks for explaining! You look Fabellis! ;-)
ReplyDeleteLol! Thank you sis! :-)
ReplyDeleteI love this! I might have to try this!
ReplyDeleteThanks Brittany! You should give them a try. It would great to rock a "natural style" while you're hair is growing. :-)
ReplyDeleteI've never worked crochet braids before but very tempted to for it. It looks so natural and pretty on you!
ReplyDeleteI have my third round of crochets in right now. Vivy from HeartPrint&Style does mine. She has this weird way of braiding so that i can part it all these different ways. I think i might get another round after this because they are so easy and since I can also wash them I really love them. I've been trying a lighter blonder highlighted hair. It's really fun and to me a really good protective style.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know Vivy does crochet braids! Everyone is multi-talented. :-) But yes, love this protective style! So easy!
ReplyDeleteI love your hair! I've been thinking about getting box braids again this summer. This seems like a better option. Taking box braids out keeps me from wearing braids more often. I have so many questions about crochet braids, LOL! I have been seeing them a lot. Seems like a great alternative to traditional braids!
ReplyDeleteThanks lady! I think crochet and box braids are both great options and easy to remove! If you have any questions, just let me know. Crochet is very similar to a sew in, but no thread is used. Instead, they weave the hair directly into your braid. When it's time to remove, you just cut the hair close to the braid and then unbraid your own hair and the pieces come out as you unbraid. I may do a blog post on removal in a few weeks. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm wearing my first set since being in junior high . I didn't care for them back then, because my mom would crochet in prebraided braids. Now, this will be my go to protective style :-)
ReplyDeleteLOL! I remember those crochet braids from back in the day, but I never knew that this style and those were the same thing. The hair is the difference. The things you learn daily! I love this style though!
ReplyDeleteI love your crochet braids! I actually tried this style with marley hair last summer. Unfortunately, I had to take them out the 2nd day of wearing because I had a terrible allergic reaction to the hair. If I decide to try this style again, I'll consider using the hair you used. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Marquita! Do you usually have reactions to synthetic hair? The hair I used was also synthetic and some people can't use it because it irritates their scalp. I know crochet braids can also be done with human hair. I just love how long curls last with synthetic.
ReplyDeleteBonjour,
ReplyDeleteI stumbled on this post as I am thinking about getting crochet braids after taking out my box braids. Thanks for the beautiful pictures and nice advice.
Love from Paris, France
I usually don't have reactions. I've had senegalese twists twice as well as kinky twists using synthetic hair. With the crochet braids, I used Marley hair for the first time….maybe I got a bad batch of hair…idk…it was a total bummer.
ReplyDeleteYou are so sweet Estelle and you absolutely made my day for showing me love all the way from Paris! Thank you! :-)
ReplyDeleteWhere are you located? I am interested in getting this style but can't seem to find a stylist. I'm in the Atlanta, GA area
ReplyDeleteHey Stephanie! I'm actually in North Carolina. I don't know any stylists in ATL, but I did do a search for "crochet braids atlanta ga" and got a lot of results.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a lot of questionable results lately lol. But if you see something I should see please shout them out :)

ReplyDeleteHEY!! I'm getting some crochet braids in a couple of weeks and the stylist suggested I get a good quality hair. Have you tried the Fretress Go Go Curl hair? If so, was it of good quality? Also, how did you maintain it...did you wrap it a certain way at night or use certain products? HELP!! LOL I so wanna love it!!
ReplyDeleteHey Doll! How long did the hair last for you? Also, can you please share how you maintained it at night and what products u used if any??
ReplyDeleteWhere can I find a good place to get them done in North Carolina?
ReplyDeleteHey Kassy! Unfortunately, I don't know of anyone in NC I would recommend at this time. If that changes, I'll let you know!
